Still learning to draw

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about learning, what it means to improve at something, even late in life. Drawing, especially. I’ve been doing more studies of the same image, experimenting with different approaches.

Color has been tricky for me. I tend to overdo it and end up with mud. So I’ve been going back to monochrome and building up from value, adding just a little color wash here and there. In this set, I tried some watercolor and gouache, charcoal pencil with a light wash, and a quick ink sketch that didn’t quite work.

The photo I used for reference wasn’t high res, but that gave me more room to interpret, less detail, more design.

This felt like a small step forward.
