December 1st 2025

Winter came this week in Minnesota. Just in time for thanksgiving travel. After an extended and pleasant fall season now moving snow and boots and coats will be a big part of our lives for the next few months. You don’t really think about it after that first good blast. It’s amazing how we adjust.

I stopped by Studio Pintura in Minneapolis recently to drop off a few pieces. They’re running their Small Works show from late November through the holidays. They were kind enough to accept the four pieces I sent for approval.
After seeing the gallery in person, I feel like my work might be just a notch below the usual caliber of their venue but I’m still excited to be part of it.

The pieces are small, 10”×12” max, and a couple basically came straight out of my sketchbooks. It’ll be fun to see them up on the wall with everything else.

The opening is December 4th at 6:00 PM, and I’m looking forward to checking it out.

Studio Pintura is in the Northrup King building at 1500 Jackson St NE,#294 Minneapolis, Minnesota 55413

These are the pieces I will have there:

Charcoal Portrait, Charcoal on Alder panel-7x12 by John Huisman
Bearded Man With Hat, 9x8, charcoal on paper, By John Huisman
A Rugged Ledge, 9x12 Oil painting on paper By John Huisman
A moment

A couple thoughts…

As I move through life, my thoughts keep coming back to the reality that time for each of us is finite. Not in a gloomy way, more like a reminder that every day is a chance to do the work that actually matters to me. I don’t want to think “old,” and I don’t feel old. But I try to be aware that the clock is real, and that awareness sharpens things. It makes me want to use my days well and put my best energy into the work I still want to make.

As the years go on I’ve gradually noticed more and more how much small habits matter. Stretching, a little strength work, paying attention to posture. They shift things more than they used to. I don’t necessarily need perfection, (though that would be nice), I just need to keep showing up. Same is true for the art: a few minutes of drawing, sketching, and just looking at the world as if I might draw it… it all helps me to be just a little bit better at the craft. Maybe that’s the point now: stay in motion, keep creating, and protect the joy that keeps curiosity alive.

A piece of music for the season of the year and the seasons of life:
